In the december 2014 issue (pbb no. 152), we announced that the american boat & yacht council (abyc) wanted to divest itself of the westlawn institute of marine technology, which it had hosted since 2003, citing the venerable distance-learning school as a financial burden.. Westlawn institute of marine technology has been a non-profit organization, and has had 501 (c) (3) status from the irs. as a non-profit organization it would not have had "owners" in the usual sense. rather it would have been controlled by a board of directors.. The westlawn institute of marine technology is able to extend its grant and scholarship program in small craft design thanks to further funding from the kathy & jerry wood foundation..
